Work Outfit Tips: What I Carry in My Work Bag as a Commuting Working Mom

Being a working mom who commutes means my work bag is more than just a bag for my laptop. It is basically my little survival kit.

From the moment I leave home in the morning until I finally reach home after work, I never really know what the day is going to bring. A long traffic jam, sudden rain, an unexpected meeting, lunch outside, or even a quick stop somewhere after work. So, over time, I learned that what I carry in my work bag can make my working day a little easier. And yes, this also affects how I plan my work outfits.

Because looking presentable at 9 AM is one thing. Still looking presentable after commuting, working, walking around and surviving KL traffic? That's another story.

1. A Small Makeup Pouch

I don't carry my whole makeup collection to work. Just the basics. My little pouch usually has things like lipstick/lip balm, hair tie and a few basic beauty essentials.

The goal isn't to do a full makeup session at work. It's just having a few things that can help me look a little more refreshed before a meeting or after a long commute. Sometimes, a little lipstick really does make me feel more put together.

2. Wet Tissues & Dry Tissues

These are boring until you actually need them. Then suddenly, they become the most important thing in your bag. I like carrying both because they are useful for everything, from cleaning my hands to dealing with small spills. And as a mom, I've learned that tissues are never really just for yourself.

3. A Small Emergency Kit

I like having a small pouch for things I might suddenly need. For example plasters, sanity pads, pain relief and safety pins.

Nothing fancy. Just little things that can save you from unnecessary stress during the day.

4. A Foldable Shopping Bag

This is one of those things that takes almost no space but can be surprisingly useful. Sometimes I buy something after work. Sometimes I stop at the supermarket. Sometimes I end up carrying something I didn't plan to carry. Instead of struggling with multiple plastic bags or buy recycle bag, I can simply pull out my foldable bag. Small thing, but very practical for a commuting working mom.

5. Water Bottle

A water bottle is something I try to remember every day. When I'm busy with work, it's very easy to forget to drink enough water. Having my own bottle beside me is a simple reminder to drink throughout the day. And honestly, having a bottle that I actually like makes me more excited to bring it along.

6. Powerbank

My phone is basically my second work tool. I use it for messages, calls, WhatsApp, navigation, checking things, taking photos and sometimes even catching up on personal things during my commute. So a portable charger is one of those things I don't want to be without. Especially when I'm travelling between home, work and other places. A dead phone when you're stuck somewhere is definitely not fun.

7. A Small Umbrella

If you're commuting around Malaysia, you already know why this is important. The morning can be sunny. Then suddenly, rain. And sometimes the rain doesn't care whether you're wearing your favorite work outfit or not. A compact umbrella is especially useful because it can help protect both me and my outfit.

8. Hairbrush or Comb

This one is especially important after commuting. Wind + humidity + walking + rain + helmet or public transport = hair that may no longer look like the hair I had when I left home. A small comb or brush takes very little space and can quickly make me look more presentable.

9. My Work Essentials

Of course, the main purpose of my work bag is still work. Depending on the day, I may carry laptop, charger, mouse, notebook, pen, access card and earphones.

But I try not to carry everything every day. The heavier the bag, the more I regret my life choices during my commute.

10. A Spare Item for My Outfit

This is my little working-mom trick. I don't necessarily carry a whole change of clothes. Sometimes, I'll bring something small that can change the look of my outfit.

For example, a cardigan, shawl, light weight outer layer and simple accessories. This is especially useful when I know I have a meeting or something after work. One simple layer can make the same outfit look slightly different.

11. Snacks

Because sometimes lunch is late. Sometimes meetings run longer than expected.

Sometimes I'm just hungry.I like having a small snack in my bag, especially on busy days. Nothing complicated, just something easy to eat when I need a little energy.

12. Something That Makes Me Happy

This might sound unnecessary, but I think it's actually important. My work bag doesn't have to contain only practical things. Sometimes I carry something small that makes me happy like a cute pouch, my favorite lipstick, a little accessory or something meaningful to me.

We're working adults, but we're still people.

A small thing that makes you smile during a stressful workday matters too.

My Rule: Don't Carry Your Whole Life

One thing I'm learning as a commuting working mom is that being prepared doesn't mean carrying everything. I used to think that if something might be useful, I should bring it.

The result? A very heavy bag. 😂

Now, I try to think:

"Will I realistically need this today?"

If the answer is no, it stays at home. My work bag should help me, not become another burden.

My Simple Work Bag Checklist

Before leaving home, I usually make sure I have:

☐ Laptop & charger
☐ Phone
☐ Wallet
☐ Access card
☐ Water bottle
☐ Makeup pouch
☐ Tissues
☐ Hand sanitizer
☐ Portable charger
☐ Umbrella
☐ Small emergency kit
☐ Foldable shopping bag
☐ Notebook & pen
☐ Small snack

And that's it. Nothing too complicated. Because as a working mom, I already have enough things to think about.

What About You?

If you're a working mom who commutes, what's the one thing you always carry in your work bag?

For me, I think it's becoming the portable charger and umbrella. Because you never know what the day will bring. And when you're commuting, a little preparation can make a surprisingly big difference.

Your work bag doesn't need to carry everything. It just needs to carry the things that make your day easier. ❤️
