Every year, when Malaysia announces its national budget, one question comes to mind: What does this mean for our family?
As working moms, we juggle many responsibilities, from building our careers and raising our children to managing household expenses. So, even small forms of financial relief or better childcare support can make a difference in our daily lives.
On 9 October 2026, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presented Budget/Belanjawan 2027. Here are six announcements that caught my attention as a working mom.
1. More Maternity Support for Government Servants
I'm not Government servant but this is good news for moms working in the public sector!
The government announced an increase in total maternity leave entitlement throughout a government servant's career, from 360 to 490 days, with up to 98 days per childbirth.
The government also allocated RM20 million to improve childcare centres at government facilities.
For working moms, having time to recover after childbirth and access to reliable childcare can make returning to work a little easier.
2. More Support for Childcare
Finding affordable and trustworthy childcare is one of the biggest challenges for working parents.
Budget 2027 includes a RM100 million matching-grant initiative involving government-linked investment companies and government-linked companies to support childcare, including training for 6,000 caregivers.
Hopefully, these initiatives will help improve access to quality childcare and give parents greater peace of mind while they are at work.
3. Tax Relief Worth Checking
There are also changes to tax relief that may benefit working women and families. Some of the announcements include:
An increase in individual tax relief from RM9,000 to RM12,000.
Expanded medical tax relief to include postpartum care.
Broader education and skills-training relief.
Expanded relief for care-related expenses for parents and grandparents.
If you are preparing your finances for the next tax season, keep your receipts and watch for the final LHDN guidelines to understand which expenses qualify.
4. More Help with School Expenses
School expenses can add up quickly, especially for families with more than one child. Under Budget 2027, Bantuan Awal Persekolahan increases from RM150 to RM200 per eligible pupil.
That means a family with two eligible schoolchildren could receive RM400 in school assistance. The government has also allocated RM870 million for the supplementary food programme for more than 800,000 pupils.
For moms preparing for the new school year, every bit of assistance can help with the cost of raising and educating our children.
5. Minimum Wage Increasing to RM2,000
The national minimum wage is set to increase from RM1,700 to RM2,000 from June 2027, subject to the announced exemptions for eligible micro, small and medium enterprises.
This could be important for women working in lower-paid jobs, including mothers who are trying to balance household expenses with their income.
Of course, a higher minimum wage does not automatically solve every financial challenge, but it is an important development for workers to understand.
6. Cost-of-Living Assistance for Eligible Families
Another area worth watching is financial assistance for household essentials.
Under the announced 2027 arrangement, STR recipients will receive SARA of up to RM150 monthly. Eligible adults who are not STR recipients will receive SARA MADANI payments of RM100 twice.
The budget also expands the use of SARA for eligible fresh and wet goods at participating FAMA farmers' markets and tamu.
If your family qualifies, check the official eligibility requirements and payment details before including the assistance in your household budget.
My Takeaway as a Working Mom
Looking at these announcements, the areas that matter most to me are childcare, school expenses and financial support for families.
As moms, we do not necessarily expect the government to solve every challenge we face. But access to affordable childcare, opportunities to earn a fair income and some relief from family expenses can make our daily responsibilities more manageable.
My advice? Take some time to check which announcements apply to your family, especially when the official guidelines become available.
Because sometimes, managing our family finances starts with something simple: knowing what support is available to us.
