Celebrating Merdeka With Our Little One at Home

These past few weeks, our little boy has been obsessed with singing Negaraku, Saya Anak Malaysia, and Jalur Gemilang.

Sometimes he just randomly starts singing around the house, and honestly… we love hearing it. So much so that we decided to buy him his very own Malaysian flag.

For us, this feels a little special.

We are both from Borneo, I’m a Sarawakian, while my husband is from Sabah. We may come from different parts of Malaysia, but one thing we share is our love for this country.

We love Malaysia with all our hearts.

And now, watching our son grow up singing patriotic songs and getting excited whenever he sees the Jalur Gemilang makes us smile. Maybe he doesn’t fully understand what Merdeka means yet. Maybe to him, it is simply about singing songs, waving a flag and seeing red, white, blue and yellow everywhere.

But we believe these little moments are how children slowly learn about their country, their identity and the place they call home.

My Son DIY Merdeka Project

And then today, my husband decided to take it one step further. He made a DIY Merdeka Tower for our son! It wasn't anything fancy. Just a simple little project made with love, creativity and a lot of “let's see what we have at home” energy.

But seeing our son's excitement made all the effort worth it.

I love moments like this because childhood doesn't always need expensive activities or elaborate celebrations. Sometimes, a Malaysian flag, a few songs and a homemade project are enough to create a memory.

Raising a Little Malaysian

As parents, we hope our son grows up knowing that Malaysia is made up of so many beautiful cultures, languages, traditions and people. And being from Borneo is a part of his story too. He has Sarawakian roots from me and Sabahan roots from his dad.

But above all, he is Malaysian.

This Merdeka, I'm grateful that we get to celebrate not only the country we call home, but also the little boy who is slowly discovering what it means to be part of it.

For now, I'll happily listen to him sing Negaraku for the hundredth time.
