There’s something about convocation season that makes me pause and think, “What should I wear ah?”
Recently, my sister-in-law is graduating, and of course, as part of the family, I want to show up looking presentable, respectful, and confident. But at the same time, I don’t want to look like I’m the one graduating 😅
As a working mom, I also don’t have the luxury to overthink outfits or go shopping last minute. So here’s my simple guide, how I choose an outfit that is just nice, not underdressed, not overdressed, and most importantly, respectful to the event.
1. Understand the Nature of the Event
Convocation is a formal academic event, a proud moment for someone else, usually involves family photo(a lot of them!) and sometimes outdoor + hot weather.
So the goal is simple : Look put together and polished, but don’t outshine the graduate.
2. Choose Classic Over Trendy
For me, I always go back to one safe and elegant option: baju kurung.
Why?
- It’s respectful and appropriate for family events
- It looks timeless in photos (you won’t cringe later!)
- It’s comfortable, especially for outdoor settings
If you have a new baju kurung sitting in your wardrobe (like me 😆), this is the perfect time to wear it.
3. Go for Soft, Elegant Colors
When it comes to photos, color matters a lot.
I personally prefer dusty pink, sage green, beige or cream or soft blue.
These tones look beautiful under sunlight, feel calm and elegant and don't overpower the graduate in their robe.
4. Focus on Fit, Not Brand
This one is important.
You don’t need a new outfit. You don’t need something expensive.
What matters is:
- The cutting fits your body nicely
- Not too tight, not too baggy
- You feel comfortable moving, sitting, and walking
Because confidence doesn’t come from the price tag, it comes from how you carry yourself.
5. Keep Styling Simple but Intentional
Sometimes, it’s the small details that elevate the whole look.
My go-to:
- Minimal jewelry (gold or pearl)
- Neutral heels or sandals (easy for walking outdoor)
- Light makeup with natural glow
- A simple handbag
Nothing too loud, just clean and effortless.
6. Dress for Comfort (Because You’re a Mom!)
Let’s be real. As a mom, we might be walking a lot, standing under the sun and of course, handling kids at the same time. So make sure, your outfit is breathable, your shoes are comfortable and you're not constantly adjusting your clothes. Because the best outfit is one that lets you enjoy the moment.
At the end of the day, this event is not about us, it’s about celebrating someone we love. But that doesn’t mean we show up looking like we didn’t try. As a working mom, we can still look presentable, feel confident and respect the occassion.
All without overthinking or overspending.
Sometimes, just nice is more than enough ✨
Just for memories, here are the photos of my sister in law's convocation on 28 March 2026.
